MCHS grievance and loss group planted a tree in October by the North Entrance to honor loved ones who have passed.
The grievance and loss group is mainly student led but is supervised by Upper Campus counselors Gary Myers and Carla Flores. The group does exercises to help with grief and the students decided that before they left they wanted to plant a tree
“The students were the ones that came with the remembrance tree and have taken on the efforts to get it planted and all the cards and ribbons that go with it,” says Flores. “Mr. Myers and I help with more of the logistical side of things and who to communicate with.”
Students wrote a message to a loved one that has passed on a notecard and are able to put the month the person has passed so as the months go on the cards on the tree are switched out.
“I honestly really think the remembrance tree can really make an impact on people by being able to write something to their passed loved ones,” junior Austin Ross says. “I think the remembrance tree was a great thing to add to make that impact.”
Hearing from others experiences with grief and the groups activities was what helped spark the idea for the remembrance tree.
“Last school year we had been meeting and doing different activities and hearing from others experiences with loss,” Flores says. “Around the fifth or sixth meeting is when we started to talk about doing something that was going to have an impact after the group stops meeting or when students graduate.”
All students are invited to write a note to add to the remembrance tree. Interested students should see Myers or Flores for more information.
