“The Sandlot” is by far one of the most famous summer movies of all time. I’m sure that almost everyone has already watched it at least once within their lives, whether that be on their own or in their 5th grade class at the end of the school year. The story follows Scott Smalls and his journey to make friends over the summer between his 5th and 6th grade school years.
For anyone who Hasn’t seen “The Sandlot”, in the summer of 1962 a group of 9 boys have to band together to save the summer, and their love of baseball. Scott Smalls is the new boy in town and is determined to learn how to play baseball, regardless of how bad he is at first. Benny Rodriguez is the best ball player at the sandlot, and luckily for Smalls, is willing to help Smalls get better at baseball and make friends.
Anyone who hasn’t seen “The Sandlot” is missing out on one of the best summer time movies to ever exist. Between the music, the story, and the childish (yet still funny) comedy, the movie is nearly perfect. Whether you’re watching it for the first time or the millionth time, “The Sandlot” somehow consistently holds the same childlike wonder every time.
This movie is an absolute must watch every summer. No matter how many times I’ve seen it, it still holds up. The music is whimsical in the moments it needs to be, and in other moments it’s classic 1950s-60s hits that are immediately recognizable and add just the right amount of excitement to the movie. On top of the music, the overall look of the movie feels so warm and exciting. There aren’t very many insane visuals or crazy colors, but it looks exactly how summer should feel, and it creates such a safe and fun feeling throughout the film.
Even if you’ve already seen “The Sandlot” a million times, it is the perfect summer movie for viewers to enjoy with their families and friends. It brings a special kind of child like magic to the screen that is hard to find in a lot of movies.
“The Sandlot” is available to stream on Hulu.
