Tri-M will host Children’s Music Day at the Upper Campus on Saturday from 8 a.m-1 p.m.
Children’s Music Day is an international holiday including most of the United States and Canada that’s been celebrated since 2016. The holiday focuses on bringing attention to the importance of music education and the benefits it has on the lives of children, similar to the purpose of Tri-M’s January event.
“Children’s Music Day is an event created by Tri-M Music Honors Society,” said Tri-M Student President Yaneli Solorio. “It’s where we get the elementary schoolers to come in and learn different kinds of music like band, choir, how to read music, how to say the notes, etc.”
This event is hosted to expand music diversity in the youth of McHenry County. It aims to permanently incorporate music into their lives.
“I hope that children find a new passion and interest with music, whether it’s band or choir. It’s definitely an experience that not everyone gets to have, and it can change many lives in many different ways,” Solorio states.
Tri-M strongly believes music is a very important part of life that brightens the mind.
“With this event, Tri-M hopes to achieve first community involvement,” said Tri-M’s advisor Tracy Tobin. “Getting the high schoolers involved with the younger kids and teaching them about music hopefully sparks an interest in the students, because, as I always say, music is important.”
Children’s Music Day involves a multitude of activities for kids K-5, such as sing-a-longs, crafts, conducting, drum circle, instrument playground, and composing.
“Children’s Music Day is good for the music program because of our Tri-M high schoolers,” Tobin states. “There are leadership skills involved in this. The planning, the running, the organizing of the event, the interaction with the students, the teaching of the students – all these leadership skills are balled into one type of event. It’s fantastic!”
