After some controversy of last year’s host and winners, the 2025 Golden Globes were highly anticipated. The Golden Globes were hosted on Jan. 3 by Nikki Glaser.

I really liked her,” Axel Medina-Ramos, a sophomore at MCHS says, “I think they’re on the same level for me.”

Each year, the Golden Globes celebrates excellence in the film and television industries. After years of boycotts and criticism,  the Golden Globes set out to change how votes were cast — and try to avoid controversy.

Although the hosts were on that same level, Glaser had more respect for all the people in attendance. The host of 2024, Jo Koy, had some offensive and hard to hear jokes and comments while announcing awards and leading into different categories.

This year, the Best Motion Picture (comedy or musical) was awarded to the movie “Emilia Pérez.” This has sparked some controversy within the category since “Wicked” did not get that award and the extra spotlight they deserved.

I don’t think Wicked should have won,” Medina-Ramos says, “I don’t think it could compare to ‘Emilia Pérez’ in the category.”

While “Wicked” was more popular and well known, “Emilia Pérez” had an impact on their specific community. “Wicked” being popular and highly anticipated didn’t have the qualities to fully take the title.

This year’s best motion picture (animated) winner was “Flow.” This also sparked some controversy because “Moana 2” and “Inside Out 2” were in this category and people feel they deserved their spotlight within this category.

“’Inside Out 2′ deserved the spotlight in this category,” Medina-Ramos says, “the movie touched on very deep and relatable topics for both adults and kids.”

While peoples opinions on both very popular Disney and Pixar movies are full of positivity, “Flow” was a new idea rather than a sequel. Flow’s underlying message about climate change and how it could affect all living things made it another good candidate, and winner, of this year’s award.

While some of this year’s award winners caused talk between whether they were truly deserved or not, people are still talking about the 2025 show being more entertaining and respectful towards everyone involved.
