Democratic candidates took numerous victories in Tuesday’s mayoral elections, with many firsts including female victories, Muslim victories and a large percent of democratic wins.
Compared to previous elections there has been an increase of women winning these elections. Two notable states, Virginia and New Jersey had women win the election for Governor.
Democratic-Socialist Zohran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo as the first Muslim Mayor of New York. According to ABC News, this election was the first time since 1969 that a mayoral election has reached the over two million voters threshold.
After his victory, Mamdani gave a speech where he talked about the past and future of New York.
“Tonight,” Mamdani says, “against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.”
Other than just Democratic wins, women also had good results after the election.
In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger won governor, making her Virginia’s first female governor. Spanberger is a former U.S Representative and former CIA Agent, she is also a mother, and she shouted out her family when speaking with ABC News.
“Its a big deal that the girls and young women I have met along the campaign trail now know with certainty that they can achieve anything,” Spanberger said.
Mikie Sherrill also won governor of New Jersey, helping set the record for the most female governors in office at once, that being 14, according to ABC News.
With these wins, opinions are divided on the victors and looking to see what will happen with these new people in power.
