Many immigrants have come to the United States to start a new life, start a family and give them the life they never got to live. Unfortunately, they have lived in fear since the day they first got to the U.S, dealing with racism, disrespect and prejudice.
On Jan. 21, 2025, the Trump administration started deporting immigrants. There have been many deportation flights, mainly focusing on Latin American Countries. According to PBS News, “There has also been growing scrutiny of deaths in ICE custody. At least six people have died in ICE detention facilities so far in 2026. That follows a two-decade high of 32 deaths in ICE custody last year.”
The cruelty towards immigrants when in custody is outrageous. Not only has ICE targeted harmless, hardworking people, but children as well. The “zero-tolerance” policy led to children being separated from their families at the border. These children are being held in detention centers with other immigrants, all with unsanitary and unsafe conditions.
It has gotten out of hand. Jan. 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen was shot to death while in her vehicle by an ICE agent. Agents claimed she, “weaponized her car,” while trying to run over an officer. Based on videos, it seemed as her intention was to drive away from the officers. Jan. 24, 2026, Alex Pretti was killed by an ICE agent during a protest, he was intentionally trying to help someone else, while helping a registered gun fell out of Alex’s pocket. ICE agent saw it and shot him on the spot. Officers said it was self-defense. It is unfortunate knowing that these people were innocent, and killed from people that are supposed to, “keep people safe.”
The amount of people that have died due to the treatment of ICE has been the highest that it has been in 32 years. One death is enough. Immigration and Customs Enforcement needs to have stricter limitations. While their job is to target criminals in order to keep the people safe, they target people who have clean records, and that are working. Raiding work cites, immigration lawyer appointments, and in any public place is not guaranteeing anyone safety and if anything, is endangering more people.
