In the last year, Warner Bros. has shelved a total of three completed films and cancelled several that were in production. One of these completed films was “Coyote vs. Acme,” a “Looney Tunes” movie that stirred up a lot of talk online after it was announced it was shelved.
Recently a small distribution company by the name of Ketchup Entertainment, has bought not only this film but already released another cancelled “Looney Tunes” film.
“Coyote vs. Acme” was announced back in 2018, with a release date of July 21, 2023 before being replaced with the “Barbie.” It was officially announced that the film was shelved in November 2023 with no intent from Warner Bros. to release the film. Soon after the cancellation it was revealed that the reason for it was for a company tax write off.
In March of this year Ketchup Entertainment announced that they had bought the rights to the film and plan to release it in 2026.
After it was announced that the movie was shelved in November 2023, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav made a statement saying that they had deleted the film since they had no desire to release it. People didn’t really believe this statement but the hope of the film coming out lessened.
In August 2024, distribution and production company Ketchup Entertainment bought another shelved “Looney Tunes” movie “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” and has since released it this last March.
This movie, a 2D animated film, was dropped by Warner Bros. for unknown reasons other than it not being CGI. The movie had a $15 million budget and has made back about $11.3 million world wide.
Though it hasn’t made back its budget at the box office that doesn’t mean it won’t through physical releases. Part of this was also the fact that Ketchup Entertainment did little to no advertisement for this movie. It was able to make $11 million dollars just by word of mouth, which proves that people were willing to watch this movie and the “Looney Tunes.”
Warner Bros. sees the “Looney Tunes” as an unprofitable IP, which it shouldn’t. Without the “Looney Tunes” and animators like Chuck Jones or Tex Avery, Warner Bros. wouldn’t be known as well as they are.
It seems that they lack the knowledge of just how important some of these characters are to people. The same thing is happening over at Disney. They only care about the money, and they no longer care about how they influence or affect people through their stories.
Ketchup Entertainment is doing a huge favor for the entertainment industry. Movies shouldn’t always be about making money. This is something that has been lost in the last few years with continued remakes and sequels. “Coyote vs. Acme” is a movie that has a unique concept and story that Warner Bros. threw out because they wanted more money. It’s really a miracle that in the next year we will be able to watch something that for months was considered lost media.
