The 2025 Oscars are going to be hosted on Mar. 2, 2025. The final nominations have been released and it has many people talking about what they were expecting, and what they want to happen at the awards show in March.
As the nominations have been circulating through the media, people have been sharing their opinions with others.
“I think this might be a bit of a hot take,” Kayleigh Jensen, full time building sub at the Upper Campus says, “but there are definitely movies that I’ve seen that I think would have been great nominees over what was nominated over and over.”
While the movies that were nominated are all deserving of the title, there are more movies that would be able to hold the titles to a higher standard if they were given the chance.
“I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Wicked,’” says Jensen. ”It was a very stunning movie but it doesn’t feel like an Oscar movie to me.”
While movies who are awarded from other award shows can be nominated for multiple wins, people think that the awards can become skewed to follow the other awards. Most movies, after getting one award, fall in a pattern and keep receiving awards after the initial win, even if fans and others don’t think it’s the right choice.
“I tried to watch Emilia Perez,” Jensen says, “and I can’t get through it. Press start, and I watch ten minutes and then I have to turn it off.”
People’s opinions on award shows and the winners are mostly off the casting. When there are people who are more famous and well known, people tend to push for that to be more popular. Emilia Perez has some well known actors in it, however, people have still come to terms on how it wasn’t as good as people would’ve assumed. Wicked while having a lot of well known people, was under skeptics for a while. However people have come to mutual agreements through the internet that they did hold Wicked to the right standard.
“I would say Ariana Grande was a reason why I didn’t want to see ‘Wicked,’” Jensen says, “just because I didn’t know what it was going to be like, but she did blow me away.”
