Homecoming should be hype and refreshing, not stuck on repeat– let’s ditch the same songs we hear every year and get something new to get people moving.
The Homecoming music is the thing that sets the true vibe for the night. Hearing the same music every dance gets old pretty fast. The new songs added are always straight from the radio and social media that can also already be overplayed. Classics will always pop up, but having them be most of the playlist throws vibes off. They should be replaced with something new and improved to get people up and dancing like they should be.
Here are five new songs that should be added to the playlist:
“Mr. Brightside” by The Killers
This is a nostalgic song that captures the main vibes Homecoming should always give off. It’s fun, dance worthy and upbeat. No matter what your music taste is currently, you’ve heard this song and learned the lyrics. It’s an easy song to bring everyone together and bring the overall vibe up.
“Memories” by David Guetta (feat. Kid Cudi)
Memories is a great song to get people up and moving. The beat is easy to move to, it’s not a song necessarily for singing but it truly keeps the beat up and acts like a magnet pulling people to the dance floor to get out there and dance.
“Sugar, We’re Goin Down” by Fall Out Boy
A perfect song for people to be in the moment with their friends and sing at the top of their lungs. This song is universally known and brings people to be more comfortable outside of their comfort zone. The beat drop makes it an easy mash up song as well.
“Oops!…I Did It Again” by Britney Spears
Brings out the best in everyone and even gets the teachers moving! Adding “older” beats to the playlist gets everyone there moving whether that be freshmen, seniors or staff members!
“Nothin’ On You” by B.o.B (feat. Bruno Mars)
A slight throwback to the highschoolers childhoods. A universal song that will bring nostalgia back to the dance floor for a simpler vibe and more intimate feeling between friend groups.
Here are five old songs that should be retired from the playlist:
“Yeah!” by USHER (feat. Lil Jon & Ludacris)
The vibes and beat in this song is something that cannot be matched but the repetitiveness of the chorus makes it easy to get bored. A song we all love dancing to but something we could all live without. There are many other songs with the same vibes that will get people dancing the same way.
“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson (feat. Bruno Mars)
While this song was all the rage when it was released it truly doesn’t bring anything special to the dance floor. Universally known but can also be universally skipped and not missed.
“All Star” by Smash Mouth
While this song is a fan favorite, it had its moment and can be retired. The beginning is part of the only reason people love it and after that it isn’t very popular or known and people start wandering off when a song isn’t living up to the standards the full way through.
“Macarena” by Los Del Río
A fun dance song but overall too repetitive and there are many other songs that correlate with dances that everyone prefers and is more willing to interact with.
“Cotton Eye Joe” by Rednex
One of the most popular line dance songs out there. But overall the music to it is something people get tired of hearing. It’s played at every event possible and it almost feels like moving like a zombie for the full time doing the exact same movements the whole way through.
While people’s opinions on overplayed music can vary, we can all agree some songs that are always played will never go out of style. The classic dance songs like “The Cha Cha Slide,” “Electric Slide” and “Party In The U.S.A.” will always wind up on the playlist and everyone will dance and sing along. Not all songs that are played every year get old and overplayed to the point people don’t want to hear them.
