As a group of teenagers walks into the movie theater, they find their seats excited to see the world they once used to play come to life on the big screen.
“A Minecraft Movie” came out April 4, 2025. Players of the online game were anticipating and brainstorming things that could’ve been featured in it. According to Vulture, “A Minecraft Movie” grossed $157 million domestically and $144 million overseas for a total of $301 million dollars on opening weekend.
In the movie, there are a lot of well known actors. Even ones who aren’t usually in comedies or in child friendly movies. Jason Momoa starring in this movie as a struggling adult after being in the spotlight for many years as the #1 gamer.
“Seeing Jason in a movie that isn’t very dark and that is child friendly is new and unexpected,” Andy Almaras, sophomore at MCHS says.
The plot of the movie had good twists and good points to make. Even when it was predictable it didn’t ruin it like other predictable plots can be. “While I was watching in theaters,” Declan Riley, sophomore at MCHS says, “everyone around me was shocked and sad about how they killed Garrett off before they could overcome the underworld. I knew he was going to be brought back later in the movie, but it made it more exciting to see how they would do it.”
The set for the movie was also not all CGI. They made certain scenes in person to really get the feeling of humans being in the alternate world of Minecraft. “The scenes that were made in real life and the ones that were CGI were very different…” Jaymeson Green, sophomore at MCHS says, “…but ultimately made the movie have a more realistic and interesting vibe to it all together.”
There were certain things in the movie that did not lineup with the game that had some long-time players a bit upset.
“The boots of swiftness only give you the ability to increase speed,” Riley says, “not jump high” The movie also threw in some short songs that some viewers did not enjoy and felt like it was unnecessary to include in the movie. “The songs were random and added little to no humor or background in the movie,” Almaras says.
Overall, the movie’s release was successful and has fans happy and hoping for a sequel to follow up on the team’s journey inside and outside of the Minecraft world.
