On Saturday, May 2, the annual Miles For Smiles 5k Run presented by the MCHS National Honor Society occurred, starting at the Freshman Campus
This year, the event proceeds will go to supporting the National Honor Society’s scholarships and the K9s4U Dog Rescue. K9s4U Dog Rescue, based in McHenry, Illinois, has rescued over 5,700 dogs since its inception.
This year is the third year that the Miles for Smiles event has been held. This year, the run will be a Foam run, whereas last year, the NHS made Miles for Smiles a glow run. The NHS board is optimistic about how this year will go down in the books.
“While a foam run isn’t necessarily traditional, I was really excited to see how things would turn out,” junior NHS member Olivia Meyer says. “It was really fun, I was blowing bubbles. Plus, it’s for a good cause.”
A big event like this requires our student body to pitch in, whether it be running the 5k, helping organize it, or even handing out water to runners.
“I was excited to help,” junior NHS member Ella Synek says. “This was my first year participating, and I’ve been told it was really fun last year.”
Miles for Smiles is the biggest event held for the NHS every year, and is mandatory in attendance for all members. The NHS board is usually very proud of the organization of the event, as the attendance is reflected in the proceeds.
“I’ve been working at the school for ten years, and Miles for Smiles is something I helped create with NHS,” Jamie Rosinski says. “I’m really proud of it, and I think it’s really great how it brings our school and community together.”
With the event came a raffle, plus additional costs. It’s $35 to run, but as an MCHS student, it’s only $15. It has been a huge success over the years. Awards were provided to the top three males and top three females in each age group: 13 and under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.
“I was ready to volunteer to assist Miles for Smiles,” junior NHS member Kenadee Gerstung says, “it’s a super cool thing our school organizes, and even though the weather was slightly cloudy, the turnout was still great.”
