A senior looks at the MCHS Senior Assassin Instagram page and sees that this year’s game has been canceled. Then they realize that they are out over $20 due to the purchase of the required materials for Senior Assassin.
On April 10, it was announced that the game was paused and information would be posted. The next day, the instagram page announced that the game was canceled due to a police request.
“The only thing I will say,” says MCHS resource officer Richard Rewiako, “is that it was a decision to keep the students and community safe.”
The reason the game was paused on April 10 is that there was a citation given to a high school senior in relation to Senior Assassin.
“I was hanging out with my friends in the front yard and they were running around,” says an MCHS senior. “It was around 11 at night and we had the cops called on us.”
This same senior continued to express that they felt the action was taken too far and, likewise, the resulting punishment being a citation.
This is not just a localized event. According to NBC Chicago, an elementary school in West Dundee was put on a soft lockdown as a result of high schoolers partaking in Senior Assassin.
The McHenry Police Department has yet to release an official statement, leaving next year’s plans for Senior Assassin up in the air.
This game is one of the final senior traditions of the year and an important one for many. It is usually a couple of weeks long, and only getting to play for one day is upsetting for many of the players.
