Between parades, dances, football games and Powderpuff, Homecoming season is a busy time of the year for high school students. Along with all the chaos, a memorable moment for many students is the tradition of getting a Homecoming “proposal.”
Originating in the early 2010’s, a “promposal” is the idea of getting asked to Prom with a sign, or other attention-drawing methods. The “promposal” idea has spread into Homecoming as well. At many high schools, students ask their friends, or significant others to Homecoming with fun signs.
At MCHS, Homecoming proposals are a big part of the Homecoming season, posing a common interest and discussion between students and staff.
“I feel like our school comes together more during Homecoming proposal season,” social science teacher at MCHS Kathryn Frey says. “I have students helping their friends work on posters or brainstorming, it’s a topic of conversation in the classroom… I think everyone just gets excited for the couple and it adds to the overall excitement of the event.”
Although not directly involved in Homecoming proposals, staff share input on the topic of Homecoming proposals, especially those at MCHS.
“Proposals are a fun and thoughtful way for students to express appreciation for one another,” Frey says, ”by keeping this tradition alive, we not only maintain a sense of continuity but also strengthen the spirit of celebration and belonging in our school.”
For all parties involved, traditions like these are important to our school in many ways.
“It makes her feel special,” junior Andrew Shepit says. “I thought of her favorite things and put one of them on a sign … it’s nerve wracking to ask, but it is worth it for this time of the year.”
Whether significant other or friend, asking someone to Homecoming is often something people look forward to during Homecoming season.
As Homecoming season brings so much fun and lots of memories, in which traditions change over time, one that is kept, happily, by students and staff are Homecoming proposals.
