As of late, movies from Japanese studios have been beating everything else by miles. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc and Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution are just a notable few, with Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man grossing well over $100 million.
With anime becoming more popularized, movies like these are bound to gross hundreds of millions.
According to IMDb, Jujutsu Kaisen managed to gross approximately $9.7 million within 18 days of its domestic release, and this number has faced a sharp increase since its US release last week.
According to Box Office Mojo, Demon Slayer made $134,303,197 from its domestic release in September. With the final international releases coming out in November, the movie has made $768,943,856 worldwide.
Additionally, per Box Office Mojo, Chainsaw Man grossed $43,261,604 starting with its October domestic release, and $150,093,938 worldwide.
The popularization of this genre is mainly due to the versatility of it. The stories can range from horror to hopeful slice-of-life, so there’s something for everyone. Additionally, animation can be unforgettable when done right.
“Animation has been the one thing anime has been praised for whether it’s JJK, Paranoia Agent or even Trigun they all have a style that makes them stand out and that style carries over to the story they tell,” says Gavin Nulle, senior at MCHS.
“Anime tones are very interesting,” continues Nulle. “There are some stories that are really dark with an upbeat tone and light colors and some light hearted stories sprinkled in a world full of chaos.”
“They have really unique stories ranging from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End to Dan Da Dan to Gachiakuta,” says Nulle. “They can make you feel sad yet introspective, they can make you laugh yet pack a serious punch and they can make you sympathize with them with a feeling of hope.”
