On Oct. 19, at around 9:30 a.m. the Louvre Museum in Paris, France was broken into. The four robbers stole eight pieces of jewelry from the Apollo Gallery.
The Louvre is one of the most historic, and famous museums. It houses many very famous works of art, with the most famous being the Mona Lisa. One would assume that this is one of the most secure museums, surprising people all over the world.
“I believe,” says French teacher Andrew Hillier, “the head curator testified for the French Senate and it was revealed that there had been warnings about the security of the room; however, making those kinds of upgrades are extremely expensive.”
This combined with the fact that these jewels were kept in an extremely historical part of the museum that is also popular, has made updating the security in this section hard to do.
“I’ve just seen people laughing about how unserious it is,” says French student, Seven Snelten.
Many people are finding humor in this, because of the absurdity of the crime. It’s not common for this to happen, much less in broad daylight.“I think the biggest loss,” says Hillier, “is that these objects belong to the greater French society.”
Though there has been warning, the last time the louvre was broken into and stolen from was in 1998.
”It’s sad that we can’t trust people to respect museum objects to be enjoyed by all,” continues Hillier. “I noticed at the Art Institute in Chicago recently that more and more paintings are being put under glass for security reasons.”
There have been many arrests, there have been no charges officially.
