On Oct. 6, a man crashed into the Starbucks on 2318 Richmond Road in McHenry and suffered serious injuries.
After the 22-year-old man was removed from his Toyota Camry, he was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center, a level one trauma center, located in Libertyville. There was visible serious damage to the front end of the car and the building that it crashed into.
At 9:38 pm on Friday, McHenry Township Fire Protection and The McHenry Police Department received the report of the vehicle crash and the injuries that resulted.
This is not the first time a car has crashed into a McHenry Starbucks, or even a restaurant.
On January 17, 2020, shortly after 4:30 pm, a 53 year-old man crashed into a Starbucks in the 4300 block of West Elm St. Five people were injured in total, with one victim trapped under the vehicle.
The red pickup, a Dodge Ram, had crashed into the front of the building, causing it to collapse. The male barista that had been trapped under the truck was able to be rescued, and is now fully recovered.
The man who caused the collapse suffered from a medical emergency and was not charged or cited for the incident. The building is back to normal since the incident.
A grand total of two of these accidents have happened in the past five years, people likely hope that these kinds of accidents do not become a trend.
Some other similar accidents have occurred in McHenry County, all of the following occurring in restaurants.
In 2016, an SUV crashed into the Starbuck in Cary two weeks following its grand opening.
One other time a car managed to crash into a Buffalo Wings and Rings in Crystal Lake, and similarly to the other crashes mentioned, it resulted in injuries.
Michael Zaitz took the hit from the car after pushing his wife out of the way, and he ended up pinned under the car. Zaitz suffered a broken right tibia, with six stitches in his left hand. He also got large glass shards in his left leg.
All of the accidents resulted in injuries that required hospitalization, but no fatalities.
