MCHS recently announced a survey that asked about the interest in a boy’s volleyball team. With enough interest this could start the process of creating a new sport for the Spring.
The process will begin through the creation of a club. With enough funding and interest, it could eventually register as a sport.
Boy’s Volleyball was recognized as an official sport in 1992, and has just now been brought up as an idea to the student body.
“Right now we’re at that interest level survey,” said Chris Madson, Athletic Director for MCHS. “So then you have to look at Freshman, Sophomore, Juniors and Seniors. If everybody that is interested is upperclassmen, how would you support a program for more than one year without a falloff?”
If the interest is high enough, MCHS could end up making a club for the following year. This club can eventually evolve into a full fledged sport at MCHS, but that comes with more planning.
“We first have in person meetings to truly determine the commitment level,” said Madson. “We first have to determine if we can support it from a coaching standpoint. If we can do that then it comes down to resources, or gym space, or even coaching personnel, do we have people interested in that? It’s kind of like building from the ground up.”
That said, there is still interest from students around the school. Many of which are excited for their opportunity to play organized volleyball.
“I’d like the team to be made purely so I can also play volleyball but I’d also like to see how far I can take my skills.” said Caleb Bone, a Junior at MCHS Upper Campus. “I’d love to see volleyball become a bigger thing within McHenry as it’s an underrated sport that requires a large amount of teamwork and practice. Plus it also requires a lot of endurance which is fun to use.”
MCHS is only in the first part of the process as of now, but with more interest throughout the grade levels MCHS may have a new sports team for next year.
