MCHS’ spring sports are starting once again, and with that a new girls soccer season. Girls soccer tryouts were March 3-6 in the Upper Campus gymnasium and at McCracken field, marking the beginning of new opportunities for the new team.
MCHS’s Girls Varsity Soccer Team is coached by Danielle Harloff and Mitchell Stengel, and junior varsity is coached by Adam Bronars. During their 2023 season, the team was regional champions. This year, there are 39 total players on the team.
“My personal goal is to be more confident,” Bryanna Witte, sophomore and varsity soccer player, said. “ … To me, a new season means a refresh, not a restart. Don’t take all the negativity from last season, but build from it and grow to get better.”
First year varsity athletes share their hopes for this season on a new team. Their coaches also look forward to using the new season as an opportunity for the team to grow.
“I’m looking forward to the girls building their chemistry on the field,” Harloff said. “As well as securing a better record than last year. My personal goals this season are to incorporate new drills to work on deficit areas and find plays that result in more scoring.”
Although goals vary per team level, all together coaches want both teams to continue to be more successful.
“My goal for the varsity team is to have a 500 record and a state seeding of 12 or more,” Harloff said. “My goal for the JV team is to develop four to five athletes that will be ready for varsity play next season.”
A new season means many things, such as new strategies and a new team community. Returning athletes on the same team share what they know previously and what may change this season.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know my teammates and hopefully winning some games,” sophomore and JV soccer player Yuvia Castaneda said. “ … To me a new season means new beginnings and new opportunities.”
Players look forward to bonding with their teammates and coaches in this new season.
“My personal goal this season is to have the players trust me and know that I am constantly working to help us improve.” said Bronars. “ … I also want them to work hard for each other – when teams do that they can be successful.”
“A new season is always filled with optimism and hope … I want a JV team that helps develop players in the soccer program for future success,” Bronars said.
The first game of the year was on March 20 where varsity tied 1-1 and JV lost 3-0. Athletes put in hard work to mark the start of their new season and will continue to grow.
