The 13 teams within McHenry County came together and competed their best with the top two athletes in each individual event.
The McHenry County meet is always a highly anticipated meet during track season. Every year a different school within the county will host, and this year it was hosted at our home field.
While only the top two athletes in each event were competing, the rest of the warrior track team stepped up and helped the meet run as smoothly as possible. The athletes were working concessions, awards, hip numbers, distance measuring and many more behind the scene jobs the meet couldn’t have worked without.
“While not competing wasn’t the best feeling,” Andy Almaras, a sophomore at MCHS says, “I was happy to be there and support my team, and all the other athletes. Seeing all the schools and athletes come together and being able to feel everyone’s excitement is definitely a highlight of the season for me.”
Athletes who made it in the top two for their event in their school competed with their best efforts and gained experience and confidence within themselves and their events.
“This was my first meet competing as a varsity athlete and it was definitely nerve wracking,” Danielle Alonzo, a sophomore at MCHS says, “but I threw and put my hardest work forward and got a lot of pay off from it in the end.”
Even though not everyone is able to get records and place in the top five of their event, it’s always a great feeling when someone around you is able to overcome the obstacles and make it to the top, especially when they’re a teammate.
“County is a meet I’ve continued to look forward to every season,” Brianna Amedio, a junior at MCHS, says. “My 4 x 100-meter relay team actually broke the county record with a time of 49.95 seconds. Which is huge as two of those teammates are seniors.”
The county meet has been a huge tradition and all athletes work towards being able to compete in this meet. While not all of the school’s athletes can compete, it doesn’t stop all schools from putting their best foot forward every year.
