Elle Smith, Advice Colummnist

Dear Elle: During the summer, most of my friends know me as someone who is fun, outgoing, and loves to go on adventures. But now that it’s getting colder and darker day by day, I’m finding it harder and harder to be motivated to do anything. It’s not just going out with friends or getting Starbucks; it’s important things like homework and even working at my job. I’m not sure what to do, since I’ve never really seen myself as someone who has a hard time enjoying life, but I’m worried that it’s going to be a long winter if I don’t snap myself out of it. Any advice?

Sincerely, Afraid of the Dark

DEAR AFRAID:

A lot of students struggle with something similar this time of year. Once the school year settles in, the snow starts falling, and we turn the clocks forward, people start to lose motivation really quickly. I would even go as far as to say that this is one of the largest obstacles standing in the way of students to be their most successful at this point in the year.

My advice: focus on the small victories. Celebrate turning in your work whatever the grade. Pat yourself on the back for just showing up to your job, which can feel like a victory this time of year. Simply enjoy your friends company whenever you are around them, knowing that friendship and quality time with those we care about is one of the most important things in life.

And remember that you are still the same wonderful and outgoing person, and no situation can change that. And don’t worry—summer will come way faster than you think.
