“My Best Friend is a Vampire” is a 1987 spooky teen comedy that stars a bunch of people I’ve never heard of. The film, though very odd at times, is charming and offers a fresh fall story to enjoy this year. “My Best Friend is a Vampire” may not be perfect, but in a way it’s a breath of fresh air. 

The movie begins with Jeremy Capello, he’s been having really weird dreams lately that feature a woman he has never seen before. Everything changes for Jeremy when he finally meets this dream woman in real life. He’s very slow to pick up on it somehow, but Jeremy has been turned into a vampire.

Since this movie is from the late 80s, the soundtrack is obviously incredible. It includes songs like “One Way Or Another” by Blondie, and “The Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades” by Timbuk 3. Something I love about this soundtrack is that it tells the story through the music. As the songs play, they describe plot points and add to the storyline of the movie. This not only adds to the overall comedy of the film, but it can also make the music feel so much more intentional. The soundtrack makes sense, which is something that can make or break a film. 

The visuals are not anything special, there is a cool dream sequence towards the beginning, but other than that it’s pretty standard. Don’t let the basic visuals take away from your enjoyment of the movie though. The usage of color in the film is certainly cool, there are a lot of reds, which plays into the vampire theme, and there’s a significant use of cool blue washes that give the film a creepy and almost mysterious tone. Along with this, the old camera quality gives the whole movie an overall nostalgic feel. 

Most of the acting is relatively ok, Cheryl Pollak (who plays Darla Blake) has some questionable moments, but they tend to be more funny than anything. The story gets a little lost at times as well, but it tends to pick itself back up later on. It’s an easy film to enjoy and an even easier movie to make fun of with your friends. 

“My Best Friend is a Vampire” is by no means a perfect film, but it’s a fun, spooky movie to enjoy with friends this fall. It’s funny, has great music, and offers a simple new story that you can easily enjoy, or make fun of.
