Messenger Mixtape Track 04: “Skeleton” by The Front Bottoms

What tunes are the staff of the Mchenry Messenger listening to? This week, alternative band The Front Bottoms and their song “Skeleton”

Gabe Santos, Arts and Entertainment Editor

Off of their 2013 album “Talon of the Hawk,” “Skeleton” by alternative band The Front Bottoms is a loud, angst filled tirade about how unrequited love can chew at and hollow someone out, and it conveys those feelings perfectly.

Submitted by Features Editor Alayna Majkrzak, the song uses raw emotions to create a vulnerable and open environment which is perfect for the track.

“I love this song because it’s about trying to get over someone and feel kinda like a shell of yourself. The best part is that the singer isn’t even that good of a singer. He’s just a guy with a lot of emotion and that especially shows through in his music. This whole song just has so much emotion piled into it.” Said Alayna.

Additionally the writing, using the metaphor of a skeleton to symbolize the feeling the character is going through is not only clever but also interesting enough to make the song enjoyable to listen to. Along with it, the production is a harsh alternative rock inspired mix of guitar and drums that perfectly dances around the vocals and lyrics to make a both hollow and overwhelming feeling which combines in a way that attacks the senses of the listener without being so jarring that it’s unlistenable.

The rawness of the emotion makes the song powerful and even fun to listen to despite its dark lyrics. It’s an absolutely great track, I can’t recommend it enough.
