Messenger Mixtape Track 11: “Waterfalls” by TLC

What tunes are the staff of the McHenry Messenger listening to? This week, TLC and their nostalgic R&B hit “Waterfalls”

So far the songs on the Messenger Mixtape have been very diverse. With that being said, we have yet to have a true, straight up R&B song on the playlist. That is until Lydia Lawrence, business manager and staff writer here at The Messenger, submitted “Waterfalls” by R&B supergroup TLC.

Off of their sophomore album “CrazySexyCool”, the instrumentation demonstrates a surprising expertise in neo-soul production. The funky guitar and drums make it a smooth listen, and a very enjoyable one at that.

While the production has great vibes, the lyrics tell a mournful story of a mothers advice for her son. It’s extremely well written, and the lyrical substance makes it an even more compelling listen. Particularly in the iconic chorus, the subject is urged “Don’t go chasing waterfalls. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to. I know that you’re gonna have it your way or nothing at all, but I think you’re moving too fast.”

The vocals are obviously a highlight as well. The harmonies that the trio accomplishes carry the song even further, making it a smooth, calming, and satisfying track to listen to. All things considered, the track would make it to number one on the “Billboard Hot 100,” and it’s easy to see why.

With neo-soul entering back into the mainstream this song has taken on a second life for some listeners. “My parents love older artists and after I played that song a couple years ago, I just had to keep it ya know,” said Lawrence. Timeless doesn’t begin to describe this song, it’s definitely a must listen for anyone trying to get into R&B.
