Messenger Mixtape Track 06: “Hey Lover!” by Wabie

What tunes are the staff of the McHenry Messenger listening to? This week, Wabie and his indie beach rock song “Hey Lover!”

The Messenger staff is back into the swing of things for the second semester and along with that comes new music for us to write to. This week, opinions editor Freedom Tomasello submitted “Hey Lover!” by Wabie.

Wabie is an independent indie rock artist hailing from California. His beach rock/indie style shines through very well in this song with airy guitar and calm vocals. The writing on the song, however, is by far the main focus. Wabie writes about a love interest and assures them (putting the listener in their seat, as the subject) that he loves them for them. “Hey lover, you don’t have to be a star. Hey, hey, hey, hey lover. I love you just the way you are.” It’s a very cute subject that makes for a charming listen.

“I chose this song because the lyrics tell a really good story of loving someone for who they really are, and not for someone’s position in life or how well off they are, as long as they continue to treat the other right they will continue to be loved no matter what happens,” said Tomasello. “The song has great meaning accompanied by a great sound, the way the vocals and the instrumental work together help to really portray the picture and message in such a good light and in a way that makes you feel like you’re from a completely different time period due to the style of the song.”

Truly the song is a blast from the past in its inspiration while still feeling relatable. A sweet listen that feels comfy and nostalgic, I recommend it highly!
